I-9 and E-Verify Compliance for Contractors and First-Time Employers

For a genuine independent-contractor engagement, the client does not complete Form I-9 for you. I-9 verifies identity and employment authorization for covered employees working in the United States. Contractor tax documentation is a separate question: [Form W-9](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-w-9) documents a U.S. person, not every contractor worldwide. Foreign payees need the appropriate foreign-status or other tax form for their circumstances.
