Merchant of Record and Agent of Record

What does Agent of Record mean?

Use an Agent of Record checklist to confirm the engagement owner, review steps, documents, payout setup, and final activation requirements.

Updated July 18, 2026

Agent of Record describes a responsibility model around a contractor engagement. The exact classification decision, contracting entity, document requirements, review owner, and payout conditions belong to the customer agreement and enabled program. Confirm those roles before treating an AoR page or status as a legal conclusion.

Confirm the engagement responsibilities

  • Engagement owner: identify the client team and person responsible for the work relationship.
  • Classification owner: name who reviews the facts, makes the decision, records changes, and approves any re-review.
  • Agreement owner: confirm the contracting entity, template, signature path, effective dates, and where the final agreement is stored.
  • Information owner: list the identity, business, tax, or engagement records required by the approved program.
  • Payment owner: document the payout method, beneficiary, approval, execution, failure, and support responsibilities.

What the current payout setup checks

The current AoR payout-setup step checks whether identity verification is approved when required and whether at least one payout method is verified. If identity is incomplete, the action points to Verify your ID. If no verified payout method exists, it points to Add payout method or Check payout method.

When those two items are ready, the product still says final activation waits on engagement checks that run after the payout-setup step. A ready bank method is therefore not proof that classification, contracting, or every program requirement is complete.

Review before a payment request

  • Open the talent or engagement record and read the current status.
  • Complete Identity Verification through the embedded session if requested.
  • Add or verify the bank payout method from Payment Accounts.
  • Follow the engagement-specific next action before creating payment work.
  • Use the visible reason or record ID when asking the program owner for help.
Do not promise a classification result, tax form, country, recurring review, or automatic hold from this general guide. Those details need an owner-approved program source for the specific engagement.
